Heating up breast milk

How to Heat Breast Milk. Whether your breast milk was frozen or refrigerate you can choose to either heat breast milk with store-bought accessories, or you can use what you have around the house. If your milk was frozen, it will simply take a little longer to heat up.


Whatever method you choose, do not let the breast milk boil. Ideally, move frozen milk from the freezer to the refrigerator the night before you intend to use it. Breast milk stored in the freezer or refrigerator may need to be warmed before your baby will accept it.

Warming breast milk is easy to do, but it is important that you take precautions to make sure that the milk does not become too hot for your baby or lose beneficial properties during the warming process. Your breast milk does not need to reach a certain temperature after it’s been thawed to be usable. As long as it has reached a liquid state, without any ice crystals, it’s safe for your baby to ingest.


However, many babies prefer warm breast milk. Pour warm water into a deep bowl and submerge a bottle of breast milk. To avoid contamination, keep the nipple away from the water as much as possible.


Empty the bowl when the water cools and refill it with warm water, if necessary. At this point in time, the safest practice is to not refreeze thawed breast milk.

Never bring the temperature of breast milk to a boiling point. You may notice that the stored breast milk may separate into two layers. The key to answering this question is simply to remember the rules of storage.


If you did not pre-thaw the frozen milk in the refrigerator, you can use these same approaches, but again, avoid the temptation to use hot water to warm up milk. The key to warming breast milk while preserving its full nutritional value is to avoid overheating. Clearly label the breast milk with the date it was expressed. Do not store breast milk in the door of the refrigerator or freezer. This will help protect the breast milk from temperature changes from the door opening and closing.


If you don’t think you will use freshly expressed breast milk within days, freeze it right away. Once you have reheated a partially used bottle of breast milk once, it is generally safe to reheat only one more time before discarding the unused portion. Running the container of milk under a running stream of warm water works too, but wastes a lot of water.


Place a capped bottle of breast milk in the water and swirl it gently for seconds or so. Depending on how cold the milk is and how warm the water is, it may take as long as a few minutes to heat the milk adequately. I would sometimes get them to poor hot coffee water in a cup and I could dip the bag of breast milk in the cup until it warmed up enough. Heating up Breastmilk on the Go?


Now this may be a silly question and. You should not thaw breast milk at room temperature. Do not use the microwave or place your breast milk in a pot of boiling water on the stove.

The milk may get too hot, and it can spoil. Date milk before storing. Avoid adding warm milk to a container of previously refrigerated or frozen milk – cool the new milk before combining.
