Lions territory

Three male lions catch a young rogue in their territory with their lioness. They’re ready for a fight. Those lions that are unable to claim a territory and defend it successfully are less likely to survive and breed successfully, so having a chum really does count! The most common territorial behaviour lions exhibit is of course, roaring.


This unique and infamous vocalization advertises a pride’s territory and warns others to stay away.

In Kruger National Park, dispersing male lions move more than km (mi) away from their natal pride in search of their own territory. Females lions stay closer to their natal pride. Therefore, female lions in an area are more closely related to each other than male lions in the same area. It is the hunting land of male lions. But as they are nomads, a new territory is looked for as soon as the preys disappear.
